At St. Helen Catholic School, education is not a collection of isolated grade levels—it is a continuous journey of growth. From the first days of Pre-Kindergarten through eighth-grade Graduation, students’ progress through a carefully structured academic and spiritual formation, designed to build confidence, competence, and character, Each stage builds intentionally on the one before it  

 

Early Foundations: PK3–PK4

Building Readiness

The journey begins with foundational readiness skills. In our Pre-Kindergarten classrooms, students develop early literacy awareness, number sense, fine motor coordination, listening skills, and social-emotional regulation.

Academic growth at this stage focuses on:

  • Letter recognition and phonemic awareness

  • Early writing development

  • Counting and number relationships

  • Language development

  • Structured classroom routines

Students are introduced to learning expectations in a supportive, structured environment that prepares them confidently for Kindergarten.


Elementary Growth: Kindergarten–5th Grade

Strengthening Core Skills

In the Elementary years, students transition from learning foundational skills to applying them with fluency and increasing independence.

Academic progress is marked by:

  • Strong reading comprehension and written expression

  • Mathematical fluency and conceptual understanding

  • Scientific inquiry and experimentation

  • Historical and civic understanding

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving

Students build stamina, study habits, and academic discipline. STREAM integration—including Project Lead The Way—enhances analytical thinking and innovation.

By the end of 5th grade, students are confident readers, capable writers, and increasingly independent learners.


Junior High Mastery: 6th–8th Grade

Preparation & Ownership

Junior High is a time of academic acceleration and accountability. Students engage in advanced coursework and are expected to manage their time, assignments, and responsibilities with greater independence.

Academic progress at this stage includes:

  • Analytical writing and literary interpretation

  • Pre-algebra and algebra readiness (or advanced math placement)

  • Laboratory-based science exploration

  • Research projects and presentations

  • Structured note-taking and study strategies

Students refine executive functioning skills and develop the habits necessary for success in Catholic and college-preparatory high schools.
