Our History

1966–1980s | Building a Parish Community

Under the leadership of the Oblate priests, St. Helen Parish grew steadily. Churches, parish centers, classrooms, and recreational spaces were constructed to support worship, religious education, and community life. These years established a strong foundation for faith formation and parish-centered education in Pearland.

2000s–2020s | Growth and Excellence

As Pearland grew into a thriving suburban community, St. Helen Catholic School expanded its programs and student opportunities. In 2013, St. Helen Catholic School expanded its mission further by welcoming students in PK3 and PK4, strengthening its commitment to early childhood education. This addition contributed to significant enrollment growth during the 2013–2014 school year and helped solidify the school’s role as a comprehensive Catholic educational community.

The school earned a reputation for strong academics, dedicated faculty, and a vibrant student life, becoming one of only two Catholic schools in Brazoria County and a trusted educational home for generations of families.

A defining moment in the school’s history came with the completion of a new school building, reflecting continued investment in Catholic education and student formation.

1952–1966 | A Mission Takes Root

In 1952, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (O.M.I.) began ministering to a growing Catholic mission in Pearland. As the Catholic community expanded, St. Helen Catholic Church was officially established as a parish on February 16, 1966, serving 250 registered families. From the beginning, the parish was rooted in faith, service, and the formation of families.

1996 | The School Is Established

St. Helen Catholic School was founded in 1996 through the vision, leadership, and generosity of the parishioners of St. Helen Catholic Church, extending the parish’s long-standing commitment to Catholic education. Classes began in August 1997 with kindergarten through third grade, and the original school building—located within the former Family Life Center—opened in February 1998. The school opened with fewer than 50 students and has since grown to serve approximately 400 students.

The school celebrated its first eighth-grade graduating class in 2003, marking an important milestone in its development as a full PK–8 Catholic school.

2024 | Recognition, Renewal, and Leadership Transition

St. Helen Catholic School was named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School, a national recognition honoring academic excellence and student achievement.

This period also marked a transition in leadership. The parish welcomed Fr. Philip Wilhite as pastor. Following the retirement of Dr. Coleman, whose leadership guided the school through years of growth and stability, the school hired an alumnus of St. Helen Catholic School as principal, entering a new era—one grounded in tradition and renewed vision.
